In practice, this means you often have to visit five different shops to scrounge together a full grocery bag.
The first has rice but no vegetables. The second has vegetables but no bread. The third sells only frozen chicken, and at the fourth you finally find peanut butter — sitting next to an empty fridge where milk used to be.

In the meantime, you’ve met so many people along the way that all the latest news and biggest rumours from and about the island are up to date again. And before you know it, you know everything — except what the Chinese shop owners are thinking. That remains a mystery even to the locals.

Eventually, you get home with exactly what you needed… plus three things you didn’t know you wanted, but that happened to be sitting by the checkout.
