Roads That Sometimes Lead Nowhere

The term “road” is quite flexible on Statia.
Locals generally recognize four distinct types, each with its own logic — or lack thereof.

1. The Solid and Well-Thought-Out Construction
A rare breed. Concrete, straight lines, drainage — built with vision, care, and a proper plan. Found near the airport or leading to something official. The small minority.

2. The Well-Meant but Never Fully-Grown Variant
Started with good intentions, but gave up halfway. Marked by cracks, potholes, grass down the middle, and a general sense of “not quite.” The majority.

3. The Almost-Road
Probably planned, never completed. You’ll see vague outlines, a slab of concrete driven over too soon, and an abandoned mixer somewhere nearby. The overwhelming majority.

4. The Adventurous Route
Unofficial, but everyone uses it. Dirt, clay, grass and ruts in ever-changing combinations. Rain, wind, or goats reshape it daily — or move it somewhere else entirely. Only recommended with a pickup and a belief in happy endings.

Shock absorbers and tyres are consumables here. Even second-hand ones live a full second life on Statia.
