On Statia, almost anything goes in traffic. Stopping in the middle of the road? No problem. Reversing across an intersection? Sure. Parking on the sidewalk? Of course.

There’s just one thing you really can’t do: drive the wrong way.
And that’s exactly where it often goes wrong. The one-way signs are almost invisible: hidden behind a tree, or so tiny they look like street art.
As a newcomer, you miss them easily.
What happens then? The whole town comes alive. Horns blare, people jump out of cars, arms wave, voices shout. Within a minute you’re in the middle of a free Statia driving lesson — with a live audience.
Nobody angry though. On the contrary: everyone chips in with a smile, and usually a joke too. The end result is always the same: driving on is impossible, so you have to reverse all the way back.
After a while you learn: forget the signs, watch the people. 😉
