Concrete on Statia

Once the sand finally arrives, the next adventure begins: concrete. The recipe is simple — sand, cement, water and gravel — but on Statia none of the ingredients are guaranteed.

Cement comes in bags that sometimes sit so long in a sun-baked container waiting for the next barge that they often arrive half set. Gravel is sometimes sourced by sifting a section of the Quill. There’s plenty of water in the sea, but that doesn’t work. Fresh water… arrives about as often as the boats.

Still, concrete gets made. With mixers that are repaired more often than they’re used — sometimes right after being filled, creating a fresh challenge: getting the mix out before it sets, otherwise the jackhammer will have to take over.

When everything happens to align, a brief construction boom erupts: the island hums with activity, until the supplies run out and silence returns.
A silence that blends seamlessly into the usual working rhythm on Statia: waiting, improvising, and hoping for the next shipment.
